Uhura, Emotion, and Language
So I was rewatching Star Trek Into Darkness clips and it struck me that when Uhura is overwhelmed with emotion, her first instinct is to cover her mouth. Now, this is of course a pretty general expression of shock, but I thought it was particularly interesting in Uhura’s case due to the repetition of the gesture within the film and the fact that she’s a linguist.
The first instance occurs as they lose contact with Spock in the volcano and again when she sees that Kirk has died. Note too how she uses one hand for Spock (who is in danger) versus two for Kirk (who is already dead).
I thought it was a nice character moment for her in that it shows how she is affected — her job is to communicate, to know precisely what to say and how to say it — but when faced with a situation that engenders pain, anguish, fear, or heartbreak, her first instinct is to cover her mouth. As though she can’t vocalize the emotions she’s experiencing.
I doubt I’m the first to note this, but it’s just something that struck me.
Your fem-Shep is amazing! From this day forward fem-Shep is now a Vulcan trapped in an alternate universe.
And thank you <3

A brilliant FemShep cosplayer who deserves her own post. I wish I’d gotten her name because I believe she said this was her first cosplay (or first cosplay with armour?) and I basically ran up to her like a kid on Christmas day, she was so pretty and nice.
I believe this is
Hurrah! Thank you for the photo! And yes, it was my first armour cosplay.
